Dear Friends,
Happy Thanksgiving! I am grateful for St. James and all the ways that this parish seeks to love God and our neighbors. We are all on a journey as we encourage one another in doing justice, loving mercy, and practicing faithfulness. Our namesake, St. James, is often associated with pilgrimage. The main gathering space of the church is called the "nave" (Latin for ship) to further reflect this image of the journey of faith. Ships make me think of water, and water reminds me of baptism.
You may have noticed that we have moved the baptismal font to the back of the church and placed it right in the middle of the aisle. This is a traditional place for the font as it reminds of our baptism as we enter and exit the church. Baptism is the entry to this journey of faith and the act that sustains us through the journey. We are also taking on the custom of leaving blessed water in the font. Some people practice the devotional act of touching the water and then making the sign of the cross to remind them of their baptism.
We begin the season of Advent on December 3. Advent reminds us that seasons change as we journey. There are times when the days are shorter and the weather grows colder. We gather and hope for the light that is coming. This season looks back to days of old when light came in the darkness. We also look for the light breaking through in our world. We honor that there is a season when some things don't bloom. That is part of the journey too.
I return to gratitude that I get to share the journey with this faith community. As we move towards Advent, consider those who have traveled with you on the journey. Look at where you have been and see that God has been with you, even in darker seasons. When you find yourself at St. James, notice that font right there in the middle of the aisle. May it remind you that, on this journey, you are marked as Christ's own forever.
Peace,
Fr. John Mark
