The tradition of Lessons and Carols has its origins in Cornwall, England. But it was on Christmas Eve 1918 that the popularity of the service took off. That year, amid the Spanish influenza pandemic, and at the close of the first World War, the Chaplain of King’s College, Cambridge – himself a war veteran – brought Lessons and Carols to that place with which it is most often associated.
The Festival of Lessons and Carols is a service of Scripture and song that dates to the late 19th century. In this service, we listen to nine Scripture lessons which recount the Fall, the promise of a Messiah, the Incarnation, and the Great Commission to preach the Good News. Each lesson is followed by a carol or other song that reflects on the lesson's message and a brief prayer.
This year, we celebrate this time honored celebration on Sunday, December 3rd, 5:00 pm. This celebration will also be televised on YouTube.
