Friends and Neighbors,
The annual Nehemiah Action is this Tuesday, April 8. We gather with over 22 congregations to ask our leaders to commit to taking action on important community matters. This year, we are asking for commitments on housing instability, homelessness, and transportation. Please invite others to attend. Having a large number of people makes a difference. You can find the details in this newsletter. Your presence helps us bring more justice to our city.
I see the work of justice to be a very public spiritual practice. While many voices promote fear, scarcity, and despair. We call for hope. We listen to problems and search out possible solutions. We approach those who have some power to use that power to help address these challenges. We do this because our faith calls us to do justice.
Doing justice and mercy are very connected with Lent. In this holy season, we are called to repent. I favor "change your minds and hearts" as a translation of the word "repent."
As we seek to meet the needs of others, we often see that larger systems are connected that create and exacerbate those needs. Our hearts and minds see that people are suffering, and we believe that we can help make things better. Come out to the action as an act of hope.
Thank you for being a community that challenges me and others to live our faith.
Peace,
Fr. John Mark
