Friends and Neighbors,
The world is tossed and turned these days. The devastation from Helene continues to unfold and we are now watching another hurricane approaching Florida. The war in the Middle East only escalates as do conflicts worldwide. I pray that you are caring for your soul in these times. It is good to be informed and engaged. We can also guard ourselves from despair, cynicism, and the conspiracy theories that abound. We do that as we pray together, trusting that God is with us all. We live faithfully as we give to relief efforts and work to love God and neighbor right where we are. Our faith doesn't deny or turn away from suffering. Our faith is that God can transform our loss and suffering.
I truly do believe that our acting for justice and peace in our community makes a difference. Thank you for your gifts to Justice Knox in celebration of my 15 years of service here. We also let our lights shine as we hosted Pride Mass this past Sunday. You help neighbors have food and shelter. I have seen more than one occasion just this week, of parishioners offering care to each other in need. We shine a light in dark times.
Sometimes my lamp is running low on fuel. I turn to prayer, scripture, and community to get filled up. A good bird-watching session, a walk in the woods, and serving my neighbor also goes a long way to keep my light shining. You can find pretty scenery, prayer, community, and opportunities to serve right here at St. James. These aren't ways to avoid the hard things of the world. These practices give us the strength to love and serve.
Take a look at all the things that are happening this month. You can still volunteer to help out with the pumpkin patch and the rummage sale. We will be blessing pledge cards on October 27. Look for those cards coming in the mail and consider what you can give to support our ministry. Bring your gifts and also bring your joys and sorrows as we gather to offer them to God in prayer, in service, and in life together. Let your light shine.
Peace,
Fr. John Mark
