Friends,
This week was full of observances Christian and folky. Groundhog Day, Imbolc, and St. Bridid's day are all a jumble of traditions marking this midpoint between the beginning of winter and the start of spring. The Feast of the Presentation joined the mix on February 2. In all of those feasts and festivals there is a sense of expectancy.
The Presentation (see Luke 2:22-40) has Simeon and Anna responding with joy to this baby Jesus they see presented in the temple. They aren't oohing and ahhing over his cuteness. They are declaring that they see the Christ revealed. That God is among us. That, my friends, is the core of the Good News. God is with us and has acted for the healing of the world, the forgiveness of sins, and union with God. How are you seeing and proclaiming this Good News?
At St. James, I see Christ revealed in folks finding a safe place to be who they are. I see the Spirit working as people come together to study, pray, and serve. I know God's presence in the questions people ask about their faith. We all meet Christ in those coming to be fed. We make room for Christ as we provide space for those in recovery. All that and more are some of the ways I see Christ revealed in our community. So with Anna and Simeon, I rejoice that God is among us.
Thank you for making this a community that reveals Christ to others. We have many opportunities to guide us as we open our eyes to that reality. Join in with one of the groups that prays, studies, and serves here at St. James. As always, pray for the church and our ministry of feeding and tending God's sheep.
Peace,
Fr. John Mark
