Dear Friends,
I am writing this on Wednesday, January 12 which is the feast of Aelred, Abbot of Rievaulx (1110-1167). He wrote and taught about the notion of spiritual friendship. He emphasized that even monks living a cloistered life must interact and relate to one another. Many of the messages we receive about spiritual life seem to emphasize the individual journey. I know that life with others shapes my relationship with God. Aelred taught that and reminds us all that to love God and neighbor as ourselves teaches us how to love.
I am thankful to be a part of a community where we faithfully seek to live together. In practicing our faith, we have opportunities for love, joy, forgiveness, and repentance. These days we are also learning how much we appreciate being present or just a simple word from someone. I encourage us all to take that moment to call, text, or send a note to that someone we are thinking of.
You may have seen the notice I sent earlier this week about COVID exposure at our Sunday services. I am grateful that someone self-reported. It is likely that we are all somewhat exposed if we venture out into the world these days. Please continue to take precautions and judge your own comfort level with the current risk levels. We continue to wear face coverings inside at St. James.
Thank you for teaching me to love God and neighbor as we serve together.
Peace,
Fr. John Mark
