Sacred Music at St. James

Music is exceptionally important at St. James.

The St. James choir collaborates with professional musicians from the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and the University of Tennessee to enhance services such as Christmas and Easter to present works ranging from Tomás Luis de Victoria to Mozart and Haydn to Appalachian folk music and African-American Spirituals to Lauridsen and Duruflé.

Organ

Worship at St. James is accompanied by the pipe organ built in 1983 by the Schantz Organ Co. of Orrville, Ohio. This two-manual, 15-rank organ speaks from a chamber above the choir transept. Under the direction of Burton K. Tidwell, parishioners Reggie Hulsey and D. Scot Williams augmented the pipe organ with a new, 10-rank antiphonal division in its own case at the rear of the nave. Burton Tidwell was responsible for tonal finishing and assisted in updating the console with a solid-state switching system and combination action.

Choir Guild

Recognizing that the extensive choral program of the parish requires significant extra-musical support, a dedicated group of music-loving parishioners operate as a Choir Guild. Their chief responsibilities are in maintaining the choir vestments and coordinating receptions after evensongs and services of lessons and carols. Individuals interested in joining the guild, should contact the church office.
