Outreach: Mobile Meals - Feeding Ministry

What is Mobile Meals? Mobile Meals is a community service that provides hot meals to elderly shut-ins who are unable to cook for themselves and have no one else to cook for them. Meals are provided at lunchtime five days a week. The meals are prepared and packaged for delivery by CAC. Those who receive the meals are asked to pay what they can for the service but many can pay only a fraction of the cost of the meals.

What does Mobile Meals have to do with St. James’? St. James’ volunteers deliver meals every weekday to Broadway Towers and several days a month to Summit Towers. Our dedicated volunteers supply meals to13 men and women at Broadway Towers and to approximately 20 men and women at Summit Towers.  Join us!  It requires just one hour of your time daily, weekly or monthly.

What is involved? It is an easy commitment…most of St. James’ volunteers deliver meals every other week or twice per month. Meals are picked up at Love Towers (directly behind St. James’) at 10:30 am. Most volunteers are done by noon. The time the delivery takes can be as brief as an hour or as long as two hours depending on how long you wish to stay around to chat. Volunteers can choose to do it more often or less often as schedules permit. Most St. James’ volunteers deliver in teams of two so the meal coolers are not a burden and so there is St. James’ companionship in the process.

Why should you get involved? Because this is a very important ministry to those who receive the meals. For many of these shut-ins the Mobile Meals volunteer is the only human contact they have in a day. We provide much more than just a meal. We smile, we hold hands and give hugs and if necessary we call for emergency help. We are truly a lifeline for these men and women.
