Stewardship Committee

The Stewardship Committee is part of the Finance and Administration Committee and Vestry of St. James. The annual stewardship campaign takes place for several weeks each fall. During that period, we ask the congregation to prayerfully consider each individual's (or family's) annual pledge.  We believe that the pledge is between the parishioner and God, and we wait until all pledges are in before we tackle the budget process for the new year.

It's all good:
a stewardship story

I grew up watching my mom every week put her envelope in the offering basket thinking, “When I grow up I’m going to put in a lot more than that.”  Years passed and that did happen.  Until over night I lost my job and my tithe went from $100 a week, to just $2.  It is painful.  I can only wait for this cross to pass patiently, but in the mean time I must focus cheerfully on my time and talents.  So my journey begins to find those.

Time, Treasure, Talent...
and Tuna Fish (!)

When I was growing up, a culture of stewardship was always present in my family, and I am really appreciative of that, because I learned at a very early age the importance of giving. I come from a long line of “Cradle Episcopalians”, as well as individuals who joined the Episcopal church from other denominations, who were active in both parish and diocesan ministries.  My grandparents and parents always made it very clear to me that we had been blessed with bountiful gifts from God and that is was only fair that we give back some of what we had been given. They taught me that every little bit helps and that anyone could be a steward , regardless of age.

Planned Giving at St. James

"Planned Giving."  What is it?  How does it relate to other aspects of Christian stewardship?  How does it relate to me?  These are some of the questions to be explored here in a look at the philosophy, role, history and mechanics of this expression of our appreciation for our many blessings. The three scallop shells that appear on the shield of St. James’ can suggest to us the three aspects of stewardship embraced in this parish:

· Annual Giving
· Time and Talent
· Planned Giving
